In October of 2015, at the encouragement of several county commissioners, members of the judiciary, and many people in the community, Sheriff Ernie Coleman applied for assistance from the National Institute of Corrections to perform an assessment of our Jail and Justice System. This assessment, funded by a federal grant, would determine the need for improvements to the existing jail and its operations and to determine the need for improvements to enhance the effectiveness of the overall justice system. The findings of this assessment have be documented in a written report.
Sheriff Ernie Coleman stated, “The Jail and Justice System Assessment report is a comprehensive and educational document that should enlighten everyone that reads it as to how the justice system in Beaufort County operates.” Sheriff Coleman went on to say, “I would like to thank Karen Albert and Cheryl Gallant for the time and effort they put into this endeavor. I know that we will use these findings to improve our operation.”
This report will be forwarded to the Beaufort County Commissioners, Judges, the District Attorney, and local and state law enforcement agencies. Sheriff Coleman also wanted the public to have access to the NIC report as well. You will find the electronic version of the written report attached to this press release.
