Today a citizen of Beaufort County came forward to report that she was the recipient of 2 fraudulent checks, each accompanied by a letter with directions. The citizen provided the letter below as the second letter she received but stated the first letter was similar. Per the directions on the letter, the scammer is attempting to gain more personal information once a victim takes the bait and deposits the check.
The citizen reports that her bank notified her that the first check was fraudulent, as the second check is suspected to be. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office ask the citizens of Beaufort County to be aware of any checks from unknown entities.
Prior to depositing any checks, ask yourself:
-Do you recognize the sender?
-Are you are expecting any funds from the sender?
-Can you verify with your bank that the check is valid, prior to depositing?
