On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the Beaufort County School Board voted to bring deputies back into the schools in the 2024 budget year. On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, Sheriff Scott Hammonds presented a request to the Beaufort County Commissioners seeking 12 School Resource Officer positions for the upcoming 2024/25 budget year.
After a question-and-answer session, the Beaufort County Commissioners voted to support the school board’s decision to return Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies to our schools beginning in July of 2024. The commissioners vote allows the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office to begin recruiting and hiring immediately to allow time for proper training and certification of new staff. Sheriff Hammonds is committed to working with Allied Universal to ensure that qualified personnel that would like to transition to the Sheriff’s Office have the opportunity to do so.
